Lizy is the Lead Singer for the Reggaskas
Life and Career:
Lizy started singing almost as soon as she could talk. She started to attend choirs from the age of 5, getting involved in Saturday music mornings and productions at Primary School. She sang her first big solo at the age of 10 in ‘African Jigsaw’, after being picked from hundreds of other children who audition, she sang two nights in a row in front of 1000 people per night. Noticing Lizy’s love of music, her mother thought it would be a good idea to get Lizy interested in playing an instrument, so Lizy began playing Alto Saxophone from the age of 11.
At the age of 12, Lizy was uprooted from her life in Berkshire and moved with her family to Devon where she attended King Edward 6th Community College. Upon arrival she was snapped up by the head of the music department and became deeply immersed in music at the school, joining choirs and the local Saturday Morning Music School Jazz Band. She teamed up with a like-minded classmate and they started to write songs together under the name ‘Donny’s Dream Date’. At 13 Lizy was chosen to join a selective group of singers who travelled up to London and sang Verdi’s Requiem and Carmina Burana at the Royal Albert Hall.
Throughout Secondary School Lizy joined numerous bands including her music teacher’s specialist band called ‘The Kidd Collective’, a metal band called ‘The No Names’, Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra, as well as a few independent jazz trios with musicians she’d befriended along the way. Lizy also became passionate about musicals, appearing in school productions of Moulin Rouge, Joseph & The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Les Miserables, Into the Woods as Rapunzel and Hair as Margaret Mead. She also travelled with the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra to Switzerland and performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
Lizy managed to leave school fairly unscathed and decided to take a year out from education. After working with the Dartington Youth Summer Programme, Lizy was asked to conduct her old choir for a brief time under the wing of John Railton, using these skills she travelled to India where she taught Music and English to underprivileged children for 2 months. When she returned she took up an offer from the University of Hull to study Jazz and Popular Music.
Once arriving Lizy switched to a pure Music degree which allowed her to explore composition, conducting, performing, Opera and Music Theatre as well as arranging. Through her years at University Lizy got involved in everything she could musically. She started an acoustic duo with fellow musician Rob Balderstone, helped start a 10 piece soul/funk band called ‘Funk Face’, started a jazz quartet, performed with the Gilbert & Sullivan Society for 3 years (taking on a principle part as Lady Jane in Patience during her 2nd year), playing in the Music Society Wind Band, Saxophone Choir, Jazz Choir, Orchestra, Early Music Ensemble, performing and conducting the Society Chamber Choir, becoming a key member of the University Big Band, selected as the principal saxophonist to perform in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the Edinburgh Fringe festival 2012, successfully auditioning to perform with the elite jazz/fusion band ‘Jazz Aesthetic’ two years running and appearing as Signora Naccarelli in The Light in the Piazza in her final year.
Since leaving University Lizy returned to Devon and is carrying on with her Musical life as much as possible, currently teaching at the local Saturday morning music school, teaching saxophone and singing, performing acoustic sets locally and of course The Reggaskas.
